After Lisbon we journeyed south to the Atlantic ocean, and the town of Lagos. A beautiful lagoon is situated close by with boats for hire and it was hard to pass that opportunity up. After exploring the caverns (you may recognize these from the film "The Count of Monte Cristo") and watching the entrancing turquoise water we hiked back up the cliffs and drove to our hotel.
While you might think that we splurged to get a hotel suite on the ocean we gleefully admit we got the room for a steal (if you needs tips contact Brett). The view was spectacular and we hurriedly changed into swim suits to begin the hunt for sea shells and the building of sandcastles.

Near to Lagos is a town called Sagres--also known as "The Edge of the World". Back in the day, this was literally considered the edge of the earth (before they knew the earth was round). Looking over the cliffs it was not difficult to imagine why. Also located in Sagres was The School of the Navigators--where the great seafarers learned their trade. Not much is left of the original school other then a large compass that was built into the ground. The school was turned into a fort at some point (hence the cannons, and most of what is at the location today are the remains of the fortification).
Wow! That is so beautiful. I'd never heard of the School of the Navigators - very interesting stuff.
